These are some of the definitions that i may need to know for the Modern History Exam: 

Nationalism: An intensly held, and often emotional belief that people with the same radical , ethical and cultural background have a right to form themselves into a separate, independant nation.  IOW shared charateristics. 
Principles of Nationalism:
-Shared Culture
-Loyalty to Country
-Needs of the Citizen are important
-Recognising differences with other countries

Liberalism: The Belief that society functions best if it is based on the freedom and dignity of the individual.
Principles of Liberal Nationalism:
-Need for a constitution
-No Absolute Power
-It is the role of parliament to provide law and order

Nation: A community of people bound together by shared characteristics e.g. Race, Shared experience, Religion, Common vernacular.
Nation State: An area of land where borders of Nation and state coincide. e.g The Vatican OR Rome – having many NATIONS e.g england within one empire
